With the anticipation of Fourth of July celebrations growing each day, the amount of planning and investing into the holiday can seem like quite a lot. Whether it’s getting the family together, deciding on tasty recipes, purchasing fireworks, or even shopping for your favorite patriotic wear, the holiday is certainly a large festivity. Most importantly, as we are celebrating our freedoms this holiday, let us not forget the military members who make our continuing freedom and prosperity a reality. At Melton, we prioritize recognizing the sacrifices military members have made for our country. Without them, this holiday would not be possible to enjoy in peace.
The mere scope of this day is already apparent to most of us; however, there are a numerous truck drivers who will not be able to take part in the holiday celebrations as well. Their time away from their home on this day should not go unnoticed, after all, they are keeping our country moving.
To put the holiday into perspective, 63% of people will attend a firework display and over 15,000 shows are watched each year. Merely putting the number of fireworks being shipped into perspective, the need for transportation of these fireworks is high. That is where CDL truck drivers come onto the scene. For example, Macy’s Independence Day firework show alone launches over 40,000 shells and has more than 15 million viewers annually. Without CDL drivers delivering these fireworks to both the big cities and small towns, millions of families would not be able to see a quality firework show.
Aside from the fireworks alone, we would never think to celebrate this holiday without some delicious food. Over 80% of people plan to attend some sort of barbeque, picnic, or cookout on the holiday and certainly eat fair portions with over $6.77 billion spent on food alone. Over 150 million hotdogs are consumed each Fourth of July, with 1 in 3 of those being produced in Iowa. Without truck drivers transporting foods from Iowa to various places across the country, we would have an enormous issue when it came to supplying the necessary number of goods to other locations.
As many are aware, with popular holidays comes extra traffic on our roadways. Over 42 million Americans will travel 50 or more miles away from their homes with 85% of travelers choosing driving as their mode of transportation. With this increased congestion on the roadways, especially highways, CDL truck drivers must remain extra aware of their surroundings. For travelers, please be as courteous as possible to CDL truck drivers as they may very well be transporting the goods that make your celebrations possible.
If it is not apparent from these few facts, truck drivers not only make America’s holiday festivities possible, but also our everyday living standards. Melton is proud and thankful to employ such hardworking and dedicated drivers who create an incredibly large impact in our country. If you happen to see a truck on the road this July 4th, give them a little extra room and be considerate of both your safety and theirs. If you meet a military member or veteran, remember to thank them for the indelible difference they have made in the lives of our country and the opportunities they make possible because of their sacrifices. Above all, have a safe and enjoyable Independence Day!
