At some point, we’ve all felt as if there weren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish everything we set out to do. As an over the road driver, you have a busy work day that can almost make it seem as if time to exercise is impossible to find. However, with the introduction of new workout techniques into your routine, you can make time for all your daily goals with time to spare!
- Try adding new routines into your schedule such as High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). HIIT contains numerous benefits including the ability to burn fat faster and increase calories burnt far beyond your time exercising. This type of exercise is perfect for our CDL drivers who have limited equipment when out on the road. Also, a bonus, you don’t have to be in top shape to start HIIT. This method can begin with something as simple as walking in intervals. For example, walking for 3 minutes to warm up around your truck, enter a steady state for 3 minutes, a high-intensity state for 1 minute, a recovery state for 1 minute and a cool-down period of 2 minutes. As you build stamina, increase your pace and times accordingly.
- Incorporate short, 5-10 minute, workouts throughout your day. If you find yourself stopped to take a break at a truck stop, take a brisk walk or do some simple push ups or jumping jacks by the truck. This will allow you to add workout time within your daily routine without sacrificing large chunks of time you had not previously planned in your day.
- Lastly, use your resources! If you have a smartphone, there are several great apps to help you create a workout schedule and stick to it. Apps such as “7 Minute Workout Challenge”, “My Fitness Pal”, “Runkeeper” and more will help keep you accountable. Even if you do not utilize a smartphone, create a calendar for workouts you plan to do each day to stay on track.
Remember, your workouts do not need to be long and complicated for you to see results. Create a realistic, yet productive routine and stick with it!
