How Long Does the Process Take?
The entire process to get your Hazmat endorsement will be between 2 and 4 weeks, depending on TSA processing time and DMV scheduling.
What Hazmat Freight does Melton haul?
Melton Truck Lines is certified to haul certain low-grade hazardous materials commonly used in construction, such as treated building products and coatings. We do not transport highly sensitive or high-risk hazmat, and shipments are handled with strict safety and regulatory compliance.
Can I Complete Training On the Road?
The entire training and application process is available online. However, in order to complete the exam and earn the endorsement, you must schedule an in-person exam at your local DMV.
How Much Does It Cost?
You can expect to pay between $100 and $150 total for background check fees, training, and DMV testing (varies by state). Melton often offers reimbursements for partial or full costs for Hazmat credentials. See the question below for more details.
How Do I Get Reimbursed?
Melton drivers will qualify for up to $200 for Hazmat reimbursement. Current Melton drivers will qualify for this immediatley. Drivers hired after June 2nd, 2025, will be required to wait 90 days for the reimbursement to take effect.

Ready to get started? Begin the process of earning your endorsements today through an online course at Tulsa Tech. The course is estimated to take 8 hours of time, and will cost $100 to enroll. Once you obtain your Hazmat credential, Melton will reimburse you for the cost of training.

How to Get Your Hazmat Endorsement
You can start your Hazmat endorsement process online by completing your TSA background check and your required training. After you’re cleared by the TSA, you must complete your written Hazmat Knowledge Test in person at a DMV near you.
Step 1: Complete your TSA Hazmat Background Check

- Schedule fingerprinting at a location near you (nationwide options available)
Step 2: Take an FMCSA-Approved Online Hazmat ELDT Course

These are online courses suggested by Melton. You can select any of these options or another class found through your own research.
Step 3: Pass the Hazmat Knowledge Test
- After TSA clearance, schedule and take your written knowledge test at a DMV.
Step 4: Update your CDL with your new Hazmat endorsement and inform Melton’s compliance team.

How to Get Your Tanker Endorsement
Getting your Tanker endorsement is simple:
- No background check required
- No ELDT course required
- Only a DMV knowledge test is needed
Steps to Add a Tanker Endorsement:

2. Schedule and pass the Tanker knowledge test at your local DMV. It’s recommended you study for your Tanker and Hazmat endorsement at the same time, so you’re able to complete the in-person portion for both endorsements at once.
3. Update your CDL with the Tanker endorsement and inform Melton’s compliance team at [email protected].
