Understanding CDL Endorsements and Restrictions

If you’re looking to enter the world of commercial driving, you’ve probably heard about endorsements and restrictions before. These elements are crucial for navigating your career as a driver, whether you’re new to the industry or have been in it for some time and are looking to make a change. We’ll break down what they mean, explore the various endorsements and restrictions you can obtain, and discuss the benefits of having them on your commercial driver’s license.

What Are CDL Endorsements?

An endorsement is an additional qualification that you can add to your CDL that allows you to operate specific types of vehicles or carry cargo of certain types. Endorsements are denoted by a letter or combination of letters on your license.

What Are CDL Restrictions?

An endorsement is an additional qualification that you can add to your CDL that allows you to operate specific types of vehicles or carry cargo of certain types. Endorsements are denoted by a letter or combination of letters on your license.

CDL Endorsements You Can Obtain

Endorsement Description
Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) – H Allows drivers to haul hazardous materials.
Tanker – N Allows drivers to operate a tanker vehicle to transport liquids/gases.
Combination Hazmat/Tanker – X Indicates a driver has both hazmat and tanker certifications.
Double and Triple Trailer – T Allows a driver to pull double/triple trailer loads.
Passengers – P Allows a driver to operate a vehicle holding 16+ people.
School Bus – S Allows a driver to operate a school bus.

How Can I Obtain an Endorsement?

Depending on the endorsement you’re looking to get, there are usually a few steps involved, though the exact process can vary by state.

For all endorsements listed, you’ll be required to take a knowledge test at a licensing and exam office to prove you can safely handle the specialized vehicle/type of freight. Make sure to bring whatever ID and credentials your office requires in order to obtain the endorsement once you’ve passed. You’ll be charged a small fee, given a temporary license, and your updated CDL license with the new endorsement will be mailed out within a few weeks.

In some cases, you may take the P or S endorsement exam before you’ve obtained a CDL. In these cases, you’ll receive a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) upon completion of the exam, and can schedule a full drive test to earn your CDL after 14 days.

Why Should I Get Endorsements?

Obtaining endorsements can significantly enhance your career. A few reasons that drivers may be incentivized to earn endorsements are as follows:

  • Increased Job Opportunities: Many companies prefer or require specific endorsements, broadening your employment prospects.

  • Higher Pay: Endorsements often qualify you for higher-paying positions due to the specialized skills required. Some companies may also provide bonuses for drivers who take specialized loads that require endorsements.

  • Job Security: With more qualifications, you become a more valuable employee, which can lead to greater job stability.

CDL Restrictions You Can Obtain

The most common restrictions according to the FMCSA are:

Restriction Letter Description
L Limits drivers to operating CDL vehicles without air brakes.
E Limits drivers to automatic transmissions.
M Can only operate a Class B or C passenger bus.
N Can only operate a Class C passenger bus.
K Restricts drivers to only operate within the state where their license was obtained.
O Restricts drivers from operating tractor-trailers.
V Indicates a driver has a medical condition that may impair their ability to drive.

How Can I Remove CDL Restrictions?

Obtaining endorsements can significantly enhance your career. A few reasons that drivers may be incentivized to earn endorsements are as follows:

  • Testing: Depending on the restriction, you may need to take additional testing either in person on a training course, or pass a written test to ensure you have adequate knowledge to remove the restriction from your license.
  • Upgrade Training: You may need to take additional training for certain endorsements through a local CDL school or with a company.

Whether you’re just starting your journey or looking to expand your qualifications, obtaining your endorsements and removing restrictions that impede you can set you on the path to a successful career in transportation. At Melton, we encourage our drivers to obtain endorsements in order to have the greatest amount of opportunity. Learn more about driving for Melton on our flatbed driving jobs page.
