Preparing for CVSA Brake Safety Week 2024

The CVSA’s annual Brake Safety Week is part of a larger initiative aimed at reducing accidents and enhancing road safety through rigorous inspection and outreach campaigns.

In 2023, the CVSA identified close to 12,000 brake-related violations across the United States. Amongst the list of out-of-service violations from last year, brake-related violations accounted for a little over 25% – the largest percentage of any category. This means it’s key for drivers to be informed about what safe brake systems look like, and how to avoid any brake-related malfunctions that could lead to accidents on the road.

When is Brake Safety Week 2024?

The CVSA has announced that Brake Safety Week will be from August 25th to August 31st, 2024.

What are DOT Officers Looking for This Week?

During this week, certified inspectors across the U.S. will be conducting routine inspections throughout the week, focusing on brake systems and components to ensure they are in optimal condition and compliant with current safety standards.

In 2024, inspectors will focus on the condition of brake linings and pads. Inspectors and motor carriers will also be conducting awareness and outreach campaigns alongside law enforcement agencies and transportation organizations, raising awareness and addressing potential safety hazards. Just like other safety weeks, you can expect a higher number of officers and inspectors looking out for violations.

If an inspector sees your brake systems are improperly maintained, it will cost you and your company points from your safety scores, and you can be flagged as out of service until your truck is able to be repaired. It can take hours or days to get someone out to repair your truck, which can cost you a lot in missed income.

How to Prepare for Brake Safety Week

During Brake Safety Week, it’s very important to stay vigilant regarding your pre-trip inspections, paying additional attention to your brake systems and components, including brake linings and pads. Ensure there are no cracks, they are free of grease and rust, and they are not significantly worn. If your brakes need maintenance, get to a shop as soon as possible.

CVSA’s Brake Safety Week is more than just an inspection event; it’s a vital component of road safety initiatives. By addressing brake system issues and promoting awareness, the initiative plays a significant role in ensuring that commercial vehicles are safe. For fleet operators and drivers, participating in Brake Safety Week and adhering to recommended maintenance practices is not just a regulatory requirement but a critical step in keeping the roads safe for everyone.
