Real ID: What Truck Drivers Need to Know

Beginning back in 2005, Congress passed a bill called the REAL ID Act in response to security vulnerabilities that had been highlighted over the previous years. The act was scheduled initially to be implemented by 2008, but enforcement of it was delayed due to agency issues and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Now that the deadline is finally approaching, it’s important that those who travel frequently, like truck drivers, are informed about the new requirements and restrictions that come with the implementation of REAL ID.

Beginning May 7th, 2025, a REAL ID License, or valid federal identification document (i.e. a Passport or Passcard) will be required for the following:

  • Board a domestic flight
  • Visit military bases or specific federal buildings
  • Enter nuclear power plants

What is the Difference Between a REAL ID and a Standard ID?

A REAL ID will differ visually from a standard driver’s license by a gold star, typically in the upper-right hand corner, but may vary from state to state on its placement. Besides the indicator, your ID will look almost the same.

California’s REAL ID example.

The real difference comes in the additional security standards the REAL ID adheres to. This allows you to use it for domestic flights and gains you entry to military bases, secure federal facilities, and nuclear power plants.

Do You Need a REAL ID?

YES, if you… NO, if you…
Are planning on traveling domestically by plane after May 7th, 2025, without a valid U.S. Passport Prefer to use your valid U.S. passport for domestic travel
Visit military bases, secure federal facilities, or nuclear power plants Do not travel the country via plane
Otherwise need to renew your ID Do not visit military bases, secure federal facilities, or nuclear power plants

How Do I Get a REAL ID?

Depending on your state, it will be as simple as renewing your license at your local Department of Motor Vehicles, but you will need to provide additional documents. Each state may impose their own additional requirements, so it’s recommended that you check with your state’s driver’s licensing agency website before visiting them in person.

The standard requirements issued by the Department of Homeland Security are the following:

  • One Proof of Identity– Your full legal name and date of birth are the key items here. Examples include an original birth certificate or unexpired U.S. passport.
  • Two Proofs of State Residency– This can be anything from your tax return to your voter registration card, or even utility bills with your legal name and address listed. Valid documents may differ depending on your state.
  • Social Security Number– This number will not appear on your license. A physical card is not required and can be shown in other forms such as a W-2. If you know your SSN by heart, you may be able to give it without additional documentation.
  • Immigration or Legal Presence Documents (if applicable)– A showing of lawful residence may be required, but requirements by your state may differ.

Can I Use the REAL ID to Enter Canada? How About Ports?

No. A REAL ID card alone cannot be used for border crossings into Mexico or Canada, or any other form of international travel. It additionally cannot be used to access any maritime facilities while unescorted. If you are a truck driver who wants to take on cross-border loads or access ports, you will need a valid passport or a TWIC card, respectively.

Whether you’re hauling loads across state lines or flying home for a quick break, a REAL ID ensures you’re ready for both the road and the skies. It’s a simple upgrade that brings peace of mind, keeps you compliant with federal regulations, and makes life a little easier- something every driver can appreciate.

Since Melton’s pre-hire evaluation process involves bringing trainees to our facility in Tulsa, OK, many trainees will be expected to fly. If you are planning to apply to Melton Truck Lines and do not have your REAL ID, you will need another valid form of identification such as a passport in order to fly – a regular driver’s license will not suffice after May 7th, 2025. If you cannot provide valid identification, another form of transportation will be arranged.

Don’t wait until the deadline sneaks up- get your REAL ID and keep on rolling with confidence!
